Internships

BalletNova offers hands on experience in a small non-profit performing arts organization.  This program provides indepth knowledge and on-the-job training and career guidance for students and young professionals pursing careers in arts administrations, marketing, public relations, or fundraising.  Interns are expected to commit to a regular schedule of part-time hours.  Benefits include free dance classes, free tickets to BalletNova performances, assistance in fulfilling college credit requirements, career counseling and an evaluation process.  This is an unpaid internship.

Term: 10 weeks or more, these dates are flexible:

Fall - September 1-November 30;  Winter - December 1- February 28 ;  Spring – March 1 - May 15;  Summer - June 1 - August 7

Interns must demonstrate an exceptional ability to set goals, problem solve, and think creatively.  They are expected to regularly cooperate and contributes to system improvements and to develop innovative ideas; posses personal integrity and ethical values; demonstrate an ability to self direct and show initiative; provide excellent communication skills; and display a high degree of honesty, dependability and reliability. 

Marketing/Public Relations Intern

Looking for a dedicated, highly motivated individual who wants to gain experience working in an non-profit arts organization, and learn the ins and outs of marketing and communication strategies and implementation. Be part of a team that is changing the face of dance in Northern Virginia.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum requirements: enrolled in undergraduate Bachelors degree program or graduate program in arts managements (arts administration, marketing, public relations or business preferred).
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Knowledge of Word and Excel; familiarity with databases a plus
  • Course work in marketing, public relations, special events management, and/or communications
  • Dance background a plus
  • Self-starter with the ability to multi-task and think critically
  • Good communication skills; outgoing personality
  • Experience publishing content to Web a plus
  • Personal participation and interest in social media

Job Responsibilities

  • Update and revise media contact list
  • Assist in development and implementation of communications plan
  • Pitch content and features to print media, news sites, community networking sites, and blogs
  • Send out weekly Facebook bulletins
  • Update website on a weekly basis
  • Participate in re-development of website  (Summer/Fall 2011)
  • Participate in new branding effort (Fall 2011/Winter 2012) including focus groups, conducting and analyzing surveys (learning to use SurveyMonkey)
  • Begin a Twitter account and post tweets daily; track and report on progress and response
  • Draft press releases for performances, classes and other events
  • Draft email communication bi-weekly
  • Answer phones, assist with administrative tasks as needed

Development/Fundraising Intern

Job Responsibilities

  • Participate in developing and administering Individual Giving program – tracks gifts, sends donor thank-yous, special programs for upper level donors, fulfill donor level benefits
  • Assists with coordination of special fundraising events (such as Nutcracker VIP reception, Spring Fashion Show,  major donor receptions)
  • Identifies and contacts local businesses for Corporate Sponsorship program; tracks and reports on progress
  • Answer phones, assist with administrative tasks as needed
  • Assist with foundation research; learn to use Foundation Center central database
  • Draft grant applications for corporations and foundations
  • Work on new Linked-In development program
